Due to endless mechanical problems during the 2001 season Alex decided to change class. At first thought the logical progression was to Supersport 600 but after further contemplation ABS Racing decided the Powerbike class would be a better choice. Alex Symon rode a road going 1999 Yamaha R1 with a few alterations for the track. These included rear shock absorber, front fork springs, tyres and exhaust silencer. Everything else remained the same except for the obvious such as lights and bodywork etc.

It was hoped the change would give Alex a chance to concentrate on riding on track, rather than worrying if the bike was about to go bang etc. Officially this was the third season he had entered, but in reality only a full season's worth of racing (10 meetings as a rookie in 2000, and half a dozen meetings without problems in 2001) has been completed. Alex's aim was to ride as quick as he could, satisfying the need to go quick. This kept Alex off the road, removing the danger to himself and others from riding quickly on public roads. ABS Racing's philosophy was summarised as

'Keep it on the track, keep it off the roads'.
