The gearing was well out, having to use 1st out of the Esses, no where near peak revs down the straight, unable to pull 4th out of Riches.  The next practice (timed) session for the Moto60 was not long after and so we decided to leave alone. A slightly more enthusiastic session saw lap times fall to 1:13.7 after around 10 laps but the gearing was still having a negative affect through the Esses and corner speeds throughtout was less than usual (contributed partly by cumbersom powerbikes/600s etc getting in the way - hmm, a tick on the 'against' side of the 'shall I run powerbikes in 08' list). Even so, the session was worthwhile and a substantial reduction in lap times was expected in following sessions.  Discussing gearing options made me realise that maybe it had been a mistake not to remove the gearbox and find out what ratios were inside (the only part of the engine touched this year since received from the States is pistons/rings!).

I felt that a change to one tooth extra at the rear wouldn't be sufficient to enable drive out of the esses, but due to plent of pending track time we gave it a go. We decided to try different (richer) jetting and also fitted an old pair of spun slicks to get through the next few sessions (hmm, was this a good idea?). The first GP250/600 race was the next opportunity to find out and was first after the lunch break. I was impressed with the New Era organisation who split the grid with 250s first. It was quickly evident that the gearing wasn't correct for the exit from the Esses and throttle response was slightly hesitent but this was just the warm up lap so once up to pace maybe all will be ok? A good start saw an open track ahead (first time since 2003) and some good track time pending.  Riches didn't go too well - 4th gear didn't pull so had to knock it into 3rd.
