Round Five Castle Combe Continues

Heavy rain came down overnight at Castle Combe but fortunately by the time racing commenced the track had dried out.  In the morning ABS Racing gained further time to learn the track in the ACU Clubmans Open.  Alex set a time of 1:15.92 in cooler conditions than the day before which was a good sign for the British 250 Championship race.

Starting again from sixth on the grid Symon made a good start and was up to fifth.  However, dropped back down to sixth as he battled with Dan Tarratt.  Quickly Alex's lap time was down into the 1:14s and began to terrorise the back wheel of Tarratt.  Finally on lap six he was able to go up the inside at Tower corner and from then on things seemed to click for the track novice.

Alex quickly pulled a gap and set to work on catching Andy Mechem, who was two seconds ahead.  The gap stayed fairly constant until laps nine and ten when he really got to grips with things.  Dipping into the 1:13s and storming up into fourth place.  With the third place about eight seconds ahead it was an impossible task to finish on the podium.

Alex kept on the pace however, dipping again into the 1:13s, and finished the race seven seconds behind third.  Showing the pace to have been able to run with the top three.  Alex's fastest lap was just half a second slower than the race winner and was an excellent achievement considering he had never ridden at Castle Combe before Saturday morning.  Now up to fourth in the championship Alex must be looking forward to a strong finish to the season and yet another new track at Anglesey!
