16 September

Morning turned out to be dry – not! The whole day turned out to be wet. Got up, reluctantly, had breakfast etc, got the TZR out of Nigel's awning, put some cable ties on the fairing and went to scrut. Joining the shortest queue turned out to be a mistake as we were overtaken by everyone. We must have joined the queue at around 8am and finally had my bike checked at about 9am. Luckily we didn't miss the ‘A’ session of 400s/TZR timed practise.

Timed Practice - 9:48am

In the wet, yuk! I cannot remember a lot about it to be honest. I felt as though I was riding quickly. I was at the front of the second group to go out and quickly caught up the first, consisting of Paul Starkey, Martin Ratcliffe (having engine troubles).

I was only overtaken by a couple of 400s (with wets tyres on probably) and Doug reckoned that I was one of the quickest out there; maybe 10th position. I am starting to remember now; I went out too quickly and by the 5th or 6th lap had scared myself into thinking I was going to crash and eased off slightly. If I had kept pushing I'm sure I would have set a faster lap because I set my fastest lap within the first few laps.

After the second group had gone out, the results came back. My analysis: I cannot believe I didn’t go under 60s. During the track day in the wet I was near 60s! 61.37s put me in 22/50 place. 1s ahead of Starkey but 1s behind Foster (who later told me he loved the wet, probably due to his extensive motocross experience!).  Ratcliffe 63.41s: using his second bike which wasn’t pulling at all low down – low down power is very useful in the wet!
